About shadertown

shadertown is a catalogue of WebGPU shaders for real web applications. Every shader on the site is compiled and drawn in your own browser by vgpu. Nothing here is a video.

What it is

The catalogue holds 77 fullscreen shaders, split across 44 generative ones that draw their picture from their parameters alone, 14 source effects that render on top of an image or layer you give them, and 3 compute simulations that carry state from one frame to the next.

Every shader has typed parameters with a range, a default and a meaning. You tune them in the browser with sliders, and the page URL carries what you tuned, so a link is a preset. What you ship is the same WGSL you were looking at.

How it is delivered

Shaders are vendored, not hosted. npx shadertown add <slug> writes the WGSL, a typed preset pinned to your parameters, a working example, a README and the licence into your repository. After that the shader is your file: it does not phone home, it does not need this site to be up, and it does not change under you when the catalogue does.

The runtime that draws it is one small npm package that wraps vgpu. In React that is a component; anywhere else it is a renderer you point at a canvas.

How it is priced

Browsing, previewing and tuning every shader is free and always will be — nothing on the site is hidden behind a sign-in. What a plan buys is the source file. 16 shaders, at least one in every family, hand over their source to anyone. The rest need a plan: Gold at $19.99 once.

The shader source is MIT licensed once you have it, for as many projects as you like, including commercial ones. Payments run through Polar, which is the merchant of record.

Who runs it

shadertown is a small independent operation, run from the Netherlands and reachable at [email protected]. There is no support queue and no sales team: the address on this page is a person.
